JOANNE B. LANTZ, PhD, 85, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at Heritage Pointe of Fort Wayne surrounded by her family. Born in Defiance, Ohio, Joanne attended and graduated from Central High School, Fort Wayne. She continued her education at the University of Indianapolis, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education, followed by a Masters in Counseling from Indiana University, and a Doctorate from Michigan State University. Joanne was an avid promoter of higher education, serving as Chancellor of IPFW from 1988 to 1994. She was often seen around campus, following her retirement, as she remained a strong supporter of the institution through the years. To further demonstrate her dedication to education, Joanne established the Joanne B. and Wayne E. Lantz Scholarship Fund. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the International Board of Trustees Educational Foundation, and the American Association of University Women. Joanne served on the board of directors for the following: Foellinger Foundation, Fort Wayne National Bank, Parkview Hospital, and Vera Bradley. She was a recipient of the distinguished Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 1994. Surviving are her loving husband of 62 years, Wayne E. Lantz of Fort Wayne; brother, William Baldwin of Fort Wayne; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Joanne was preceded in death by sister, Alvera Shaw of Bloomington, Ind.; and parents, Hiram and Ethel J. Baldwin (formerly of Defiance, Ohio). Funeral service is 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at Leo United Methodist Church, 13527 Leo Road, Leo, Ind., with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Reverend Ann Lantz officiating.
