Mrs. Byrd was a longstanding officer of the Society for the Preservation of the Free Will Baptist Church in Pripet, Islesboro, greatly helping the effort to restore the church and cemetery. She was also a longstanding officer of the Islesboro Historical Society and very involved with its efforts to document the heritage of the people of Islesboro. Mrs. Byrd was a member of several Island sewing circles, quilting circles, and bridge groups, and promoted the artistic efforts of its young people through the annual talent show. She baked dozens of hot cross buns at Easter and an enormous variety of cookies at Christmas, distributing these delicious goods to the Island community.
Mrs. Byrd was born to Harold Bertram Johnson, of Waltham, Massachusetts, and Bernice Thomas Johnson, of Islesboro, Maine, on March 21, 1911. She attended Waltham, Massachusetts, High School. After graduation, she met Sophus Carl Bakken, a Boy Scout executive, while he was at a Scout convention and she was traveling with a musical group, and they married on August 1, 1929. They lived in Minnesota, then South Dakota. Their daughter, Nancy Bakken, was born on August 4, 1930. Sophus Bakken died soon after and Mrs. Byrd moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where she became involved in the musical community and played violin for the Norfolk Symphony. She worked for the American Red Cross and later for the Pennsylvania Railroad, where she met her second husband, Harold T. Byrd, who was a marine engineer for the Railroad.
Mrs. Byrd and Harold T. Byrd married in Norfolk on February 26, 1949, then moved to Islesboro in 1954 when Mr. Byrd retired from the Railroad. After Mr. Byrd's death on January 5, 1960, Mrs. Byrd moved to Portland, Maine, worked for H.M. Payson and Company and played with the Portland Symphony from 1960 until her retirement in 1981. Then, she moved back to Islesboro.
Mrs. Byrd spent many winters with her daughter, Nancy Bakken Johnston, son-in-law, Robert C. Johnston, and their children in Titusville, New Jersey, where she became involved in various sewing and quilting groups. Her daughter Nancy died in 1999.
Mrs. Byrd is survived by her sister, Thelma J. McLaughlin, of Portland, Maine, as well as her four grandchildren, their spouses, and four great-grandchildren: Kathryn Johnston and her daughter Sorrel of Roseburg, Oregon; Barbara Johnston and her partner Martha Kelch of Rochester, New York; Kenneth Johnston, his wife Andrea, their son Danny, daughter Jenna, and son Tyler, of Dover, New Jersey; and Carol Johnston and her husband Richard P. Curran of Montgomery Township, New Jersey.
She is also survived by her niece Patricia A. McLaughlin of Falmouth, Maine; niece Janet Warner of Palos Verdes, California; niece Sheila Johnson of Falmouth, Maine; and nephew James McLaughlin and his wife Lorraine of Gorham, Maine. She has eleven great-nieces and great-nephews: Elizabeth Clark, her husband Bradley, and their children Alexander and Meridith of Cumberland Center, Maine; Jonathan Warner of Southlake Tahoe, California; Thomas Warner of Redondo Beach, California; Elizabeth Warner of Redondo Beach, California; Jeffrey Loeffler, his wife Kim, son Joshua, and daughters Gabriel and Channi of Rochester, New York; Mark Loeffler, his wife Megan, and their children Sarah, Max, Sophie, and Eli of Islesboro, Maine; Cheryl Denis and her husband Jay of Tedding, England; Andrew Loeffler of Portland, Maine; Alyson Knox, her husband Dan, and their son Elijah of Falmouth, Maine; Douglas McLaughlin of Portland, Maine; and Jessica McLaughlin of Cumberland, Maine. She is survived also by her step-children Ellen Byrd Field and Margaret Byrd Webb and her four step-grandchildren Sandra Field Wagoner of Charlotte, North Carolina; Margaret Field Love of Salisbury, North Carolina; Deborah Webb Willis of Glen Allen, Virginia; and William Webb III of Millersville, Maryland. In addition, Mrs. Byrd is survived by her friends and the warm and supportive community of Islesboro.

Sophus was a Boy Scout executive and they met while he was at a Scout convention and she was traveling with a musical group. They married August 1, 1929. They lived in Minnesota and South Dakota, where their daughter, Nancy, was born August 4, 1930. The family lived in Rapid City on the 1930 federal census. Sophus died in 1935.
Pauline and Harold T. Byrd married in Norfolk, Virginia, on February 26, 1949. They moved to Isleboro in 1954 when Mr. Byrd retired from the railroad. He died January 5, 1960.
When Pauline died on Isleboro, a granddaughter came and took her for burial out of state. She lived alone on Isleboro for many years.
