Bishop Israel Blake was born to the late Reuben and Margaret Blake on October 24, 1946 in Sanford, FL. It was there in the seventh grade that he met and became close friends with his wife and helpmate, Barbara. Three years later they began a courtship, and at the tender age of 17 they were wed in holy matrimony. To this union were born Anita, Israel (Denny) and the late Cecelia.
God's Grace was upon Bishop Blake from an early age. His dedication to God, passion for people, academic excellence, and leadership abilities were already distinguishing him in his community. He graduated Crooms High School as class valedictorian. After graduation, Bishop Blake briefly considered a career in pharmacy, but God was summoning him to the high call of leading His People into sincere discipleship and worship. Over the years God would lead Bishop Blake to establish and pastor several churches that would serve as beacons of hope throughout the South Georgia, Florida, and Alabama regions.
In 1978, Bishop Blake and his family founded The House of Prayer and Deliverance in Thomasville, GA as a house church with just 10 faithful members. At the heart of the ministry was a devotion to sound Biblical doctrine, holiness, and love. At the time, he and his family were commuting to Thomasville bi-weekly from their home in Plant City, FL. Throughout the 1980s, God continuously blessed the church with His Favor. Its membership grew in number, spiritual development, and outreach. In 1986, Bishop Blake and his family relocated to Thomasville. In 1992, the church moved to its current location at 228 Augusta Ave. on four acres of land, and in 1998 the church changed its name to Disciples of Jesus Ministries, Inc. Under the leadership of Bishop Blake and his family, the congregation has swelled to over 1,000 members who are living out Christ's call of love and discipleship within the community.
Among his many accolades and honors, Bishop Blake also earned a Masters of Religious Arts in Psychology in 1996 and a Doctorate of Theology in 1997 from Jacksonville Theological Seminary.
Bishop Blake departed this life on December 27, 2017 after a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cecelia and grandson, Raymond Bordley; his sisters, Ethel Alloway and Mary Blake; his brother, Rueben (Buddy) Blake; and his sister-in-law Dorothy Smith Pringle. He leaves to celebrate his life his beloved wife Barbara; his children: Anita (Joel) Davis, and Israel Denny (Chandra) Blake; dedicated and beloved sisters: Carrie Blake, Margaret Blake Tillman, Dinah Blake Graham, Alberta Blake Rivers. He also leaves to cherish him his grandchildren: Latoya Davis, Joel Davis, Jr, Joshua (Malayasia) Davis, Kayla Davis; Kandace Blake, Kamberlyn Blake, Jada Blake, Tyler Knuckles, Paige Knuckles; his great grandchild: Joshua, Jr.; and many loved ones and friends who will miss him dearly.
Even through sickness, Bishop Blake had unshakeable faith in God and always had an encouraging word for others. He loved his wife and family fervently and loved his community with compassion. He leaves behind him a life rich in service dedicated to building the Kingdom of God.
