Leandro Abeyta, age 86, a resident of Vaughn, NM, passed from this life on October 14, 2016.
During his nearly 60 years as a citizen of Vaughn, Leandro Abeyta represented the town as a mayor, teacher, state champion coach and business leader. Leandro enjoyed sports, hunting, golfing, traveling and having a good meal.
Leandro Abeyta was born on January 16, 1930 in Pinos Wells, NM to Jesús and Dulcinea Abeyta. Grew up on the family ranch in Pinos Wells and attended Corona High School.
After receiving his BA in education from St. Joseph’s College in Albuquerque, he became a teacher at Vaughn High School in 1951. In addition to teaching math and driver’s education, Abeyta coached both football and basketball. In 1973, he was named New Mexico Class A Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a state championship in football. Leandro also started and owned a number of businesses in central New Mexico over the years including the Ranch View Motel, Café and Exxon Station, the Conoco Bulk Plant of Vaughn, the Pueblo Conoco Station of Fort Sumner, the Abeyta Cement Factory of Vaughn and the Leandro Abeyta Ranch. After retiring from teaching in 1982, Abeyta served as mayor of Vaughn, from 1993 until 2006. Leandro was a director for Citizens State Bank and United New Mexico Bank, served on the Eastern Plains Council of Governments and was a devoted member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church.
Since 1993, Abeyta has represented District 3 on the Board of Trustees for the Central New Mexico Electric Cooperative. Abeyta is survived by his brother, Eddie Abeyta (Vera) of Vaughn, his sister Josefita Abeyta Uher Wirt (Robert) of Los Lunas, 6 nephews, 3 nieces, their spouses and children.
His rosary and memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the VHS Gymnasium in Vaughn, NM, followed by interment in Pinos Wells Cemetery.
