William Austin was born in Townsend Settlement in 1832. He was educated in Homer, NY, the New York Conference Seminary and the old New York Central College.

In 1857 he went to Kansas and established the "Kansas Leader" a Free State paper in Centropolis, Franklin county. He was made clerk of the Franklin County Commissioners and the first Registrar of Deeds.

He returned to New York in 1858 to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1860 and moved to Trumansburg. At the age of 30, he assisted in raising Co. G 109 NY Volunteers. He enlisted 8/13/1862 at Binghamton, NY as a 2nd Lieutenant and was commissioned into "G" Co. NY 109th Infantry Oct. 10, 1862. He was wounded in Aug 1864 in the Weldon Railroad, VA battle
He was discharged for wounds on 1/4/1865.
Promotions: 1st Lieut 4/18/1863

William returned to Trumansburg and practicing law. He built a beautiful home on the corner of Seneca and Bradley streets for his bride, Ann Elize Allen. William and Ann had five daughters. The housein which they raised their family is now listed on the NY historical register.

At the time of his death he was a well known and respected lawyer throughout the county and dean of the Tompkins County Bar.
