McMAHON, Gerard (Gerry), Lt. Gen (Retd), DSM (Moorefield Drive, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland) - 19th January 2018 (peacefully) in the excellent care of the staff at Blackrock Clinic, Dublin, Ireland.

Sadly missed by his wife Ann, sons Garret, Aengus and Félim, daughters-in-law Linda and Clodagh, sister Mona, grandchildren Áine and Ruarí, nieces and nephews, extended family, former Defence Forces colleagues and friends.

Limerick-born Lt Gerenral Gerry McMahon (retired). Retired chief of staff of the Irish Army died at the Blackrock Clinic surrounded by his family. Born in Limerick City to Alphonsus and Lilly McMahon Gerry grew up in Cathedral Villas in the shadow of St Johns Cathedral. He was a pupil at Sexton Street CBS after which he entered the Army and trained at the Curragh Camp, Kildare. He held various posts in the Army in the Congo, Lebanon and UN in New York before being appointed Chief of Staff in the mid-nineties. He was a member of Young Munster RFC and even though he lived in Newbridge Co. Kildare he regularly travelled to his native Limerick city to watch Young Munster compete in the AIL. He was also a keen supporter of Munster Provincial TEAM despite living in Leinster since his early 20s. He was also a former president of Army RFC. Gerry had a love of Limerick and used to spend time here each August, often with his grandchildren showing them where he grew up and each of the historical sights around the city. He often quipped that his favourite bookshop in the whole world was O’Mahony’s and regularly visited it when down for an AIL or Munster match. Gerry is survived by his wife Ann, sons Garrett, Aengus and Felim and sister Mona.

Gerry (Gerald) McMahon DSM, Lieutenant General (retired), a native of Limerick, entered the Cadet School in the Curragh in 1953. He served in the Defence Forces for forty-five years, retiring in August 1998 as Chief of Staff. He served overseas with the 37th Infantry Battalion in the Congo, 21st Infantry Group in Cyprus, 44th Infantry Battalion in the Lebanon. He spent two years as an Observer with UNTSO (United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation) in the Middle East and also served in the UN Headquarters in New York. He oversaw a period of major reorganisation in the Defence Forces.
