Lester was was a 1951 graduate of South Bend Central High School. He went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force. He became a mechanical designer, working at Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka for 22 years, and at Bayer Ames Diagnostic in Mishawaka for 12 years. He retired from Bayer Ames in 1995. He coaches baseball at East End Little League in Mishawaka, enjoyed playing golf, and was an avid photographer. In his later years, he moved to Southfield Village in South Bend, where he maintained the library.
He married Barbara RHODES on August 3, 1952, in Biloxi, Mississippi, while in the military; Barbara died in November 2014. He was survived by their daughter and son, by five grandchildren, by seven great-grandchildren, and by his brother, Elmer Doyle, of Galien, Michigan.
