Catherine Baker “Kay”, 96, of Kankakee passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Presence Merkle-Knipprath. She was born September 29, 1921 in Pittston, PA to Anthony and Rose (Matasavage) Burkmonus. Kay married Irvin J. Baker January 13, 1945 and he died December 25, 1998. She was a homemaker, a member of the Y.M.C.A., St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and C.C.W. She volunteered for Catholic Charities, St. Mary’s Hospital and the R.S.V.P. program. Catherine enjoyed swimming and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven A. (Marla) Baker of Spring Valley, CA, a daughter, Catherine E. Willi of Kankakee and a son-in-law, Fred Benoit of Merrionette Park, IL. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 5 sisters, 4 children; Deborah Shirley, Valerie Benoit, Terry Baker and Don Baker.
The visitation will be Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 2-5pm at Schreffler Funeral Home, Kankakee Chapel. The funeral will be Monday, January 8, 2018, 10 am at St. John Paul II Catholic Church West Campus. Father Charles Wheeler will officiate. Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, L’Erable, IL. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
