Journalist, historian, civil-rights chronicler. Lerone Bennett Jr. was born into segregation and lived through -- and wrote about -- milestones in America's civil rights movement. He recorded the unfolding events in the pages of Ebony magazine, where he worked for more than a half-century as a writer and editor. He also wrote a number of books delving into various periods of history. Among them: "The Shaping of Black America" and "Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America." His books have been published in multiple languages, he received a number of honorary degrees, and he was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame in Atlanta. He had ink in his veins early, writing for his high school newspaper, and editing the student newspaper at Morehouse College in Atlanta, as well. He was predeceased by his wife, journalist Gloria Sylvester Bennett. A service was conducted February 24, 2018 at the Saint Columbanus Catholic Church in Chicago. He was laid to rest privately thereafter.
