History - Clarissa Lora Jones was born in Richalnd, New York in 1815. She and her sister, Louisa, were the only members of their family to join the Mormon Church. It was a sorrowful parting when the girls left their family and went to live in Nauvoo, Illinois. Here Clarissa married Cyrus Culver Canfield. Their son, myron, was born in nauvoo, Cyrus Canfield prepared his family to move west, but he joined the Mormon Battalion, leaving his family at Winter Quarters. Not long after that, the baby, with many others, was stricken with scurvy and died. The following spring in 1848, Clarissa and her sister started in the Heber C. Kimball's Company for the west. They drove their own oxen alone, with no help from the men, except to yoke and unyoke the team.
When Clarissa's husband returned, they lived in Ogden where two daughters were born to them-Ellen and Melissa. Not long after Melissa was born, Cyrus returned to California and later died there. Around 1852, Clarissa met and married a widower, Josiah Arnold. They had two children - Maria and Hyrum Chester. They settled in West Jordan (Midvale).
Two years later Josiah died and his wife was left with four children to raise. A few years later her son died but her three daughters grew to womanhood. Ellen married Thomas Stokes and moved to Draper, Utah. Melissa married John Borlase, and Maria married Hyrum Goff. Soon after her young daughter's marriage, Clarissa with Isaac and Mary Goff, established a general merchandise store known as the Goff Company, with Hyrum Goff as manager. This was one of the first merchandise institutions in this part of Salt Lake County and was existence for more than fifty years.
