Wallace Olds, My Father

He was born in November of 1909 and, in his old age, fall became his favorite time of year.

He grew up in the hardest of times and he and his eight brothers and sisters were well acquainted with hard work and hunger pains.

He had a quick wit and a ready laugh and that elusive talent for making the best of a bad situation.

I wasn't the only one who found my dad to be a unique character. He was known throughout our little town and people from all walks of life enjoyed his company.

With his twinkling blue eyes and endless supply of patience, he tried to teach his children to enjoy the moment. He raised the three of us alone after the death of our mother in 1957, and devoted himself to caring for his children. Day by day he did the best he could to be mother and father.

If I honored him most for any one achievement, it would be that; the raising of three children alone. He instilled in each of us a spirit of adventure that helped to ease the sting of losing our mom. And so, together, we faced each day with anticipation. Each time I look back, I'm surprised anew; that in his quiet unassuming way he was an incredible man.
