Arlene B. Shiffert, 79, of Gravel Pike, Chapel, Berks County, died Friday, Sept. 5, at home. She was the wife of Francis L. Shiffert.

She was a bookkeeper for her husband and father-in-law at the former E.J. Shiffert Plumbing & Heating, Chapel, for many years before retiring in 1984. Previously, she was employed by the Norristown Courthouse; Pennsylvania Power & Light Co., Sellersville, and as a bookkeeper for the former Browner & Black Pocketbook Factory, East Greenville.

She was also an auditor in Hereford Township for many years.

Born in Hoppenville, Montgomery County, she was a daughter of the late Frederick W. and Emma (Freed) Bieler.

She was a member of Old Zionsville United Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday School teacher, choir member and treasurer for many years.

A 1938 graduate of the former Taylor Business School, Philadelphia, she was active in its sports program.

A 48-year member of Perkiomen Chapter 318 Order of the Eastern Star, Red Hill, she served as matron and treasurer for many years. She was also a past matron of Allentown Court 9 Order of the Amaranth, Red Hill, and a former member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Allentown.

She was a member of the American Legion auxiliary, East Greenville, the Upper Perkiomen Senior Citizens Center and the East Greenville Fire Company auxiliary.

Survivors: Husband; son, Richard M. of Lebanon; brothers, Russell of Venice, Fla., Frederick J. and T. Robert, both of East Greenville, Willard of Bowie, Md., and Charles of San Diego; sisters, Myrtle, wife of Charles Gronert of Riverside, R.I., Frances, wife of Walter Jarman of Milford, Del., and Naomi, wife of Walter Kutsch of Landover, Md., nieces and nephews.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Mann Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville. Call 10-11 a.m. Tuesday.

( actually she and her husband are buried about a mile away in the "Zionsville Reformed Church cemetery" the smaller of the two cemeteries)
