Mack McKinley Haddix was born in Bridgeport, Nebraska to James McKinley and Elsie May (Weaver) Haddix. He attended Morrill County High School 1939-43 where he excelled as an athlete in football, basketball, and track and was All-Conference in many sports. After graduating he joined the United States Marine Corp and served during World War II. After the war he married Martha Jean Bennett from Sioux City, IA and moved to Arvada, Colorado. He was a carpenter and worked as a cabinet maker during the housing boom in Arvada and Denver after the war.
