Professional Football Player. For six seasons (1958 to 1963), he played at the offensive end/tight end positions in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. Born John Frederick Dugan, he played football initially during his years at Stamford High School in Connecticut. After briefly attending the University of Alabama, before enrolling at the University of Dayton. While with the Flyers, he led the nation in receptions and set a school record for 37 catches with 546 yards, as he achieved All-American honors. Selected by the San Francisco 49ers during the 7th round of the 1957 NFL Draft, Dugan would become known producing receptions in often dramatic fashion. In 1960, he earned the distinction of being a member of the Dallas Cowboys during their inaugural season (1960) and was among one of the first in their starting receivers core. After he was acquired by the Redskins, he produced career-high numbers with 53 receptions and 817 yards. At the time, his 53 catches set the Washington Redskins' team record for a single season. In 75 career regular season games, he compiled 153 receptions for 2,226 yards, with 13 touchdowns. After retiring from football, he operated a bar and restaurant.
