Rachel Genevieve Bailey Marshall died peacefully with her daughter Laurel by her side on March 20, 2018. Rachel was born April 9, 1929 in Elko, Nevada to Wallace Bailey and Mary Rand Bailey. She grew up on the Bailey Ranch in northern Diamond Valley, Nevada.
Rachel was one of five siblings, and was the only daughter. She attended a one-room schoolhouse on the Sadler Ranch with her brothers and rode her horse to school each day. Later the school house was moved to their home ranch where she enjoyed her elementary years under the guidance of her Aunt Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Walker Thomas and Ruth Sadler. As the only daughter in the family, Rachel spent her younger years always helping her mother with various household and ranch chores.
Rachel recalled many times that her greatest influence in her life-long walk with the Lord was her Aunt Liz. Aunt Liz was a teacher and a faithful follower of Christ, expressing this many times to the young Bailey children. She was always thankful for her Aunt’s witness for Christ as she felt it influenced her whole family.
She graduated from Eureka County High School at age sixteen in 1945 and received her teaching certificate two years later from the University of Nevada – Reno. She was life-long friends with her college roommate Marge Prunty of Elko County.
Her first teaching job was in Palisade, Nevada and included several students from the railway. Soon afterwards she received a teaching contract in Henderson, Nevada. Her mother Mary, not wanting her to live alone in a city, sent her brother Booth with her. Later they were joined by their youngest brother Lee.
She met and soon married William ‘Bill’ Marshall, later ‘Pop’ to his grandchildren, on July 14, 1951 at the Bailey Ranch in Pine Valley.
They made their first home on the Siri Ranch, just north of the Bailey ranch. The family spent many years living in Nevada and California doing contract fence work before moving back to Diamond Valley in 1979 to farm.
Their marriage was an inspiration to many. Their granddaughter Julie, who married in October 2017, feels that Gramma Rachel modeled the type of wife that she hopes to be. “Pop was strong as an oak, but Gramma was his root system”, she said.
Rachel’s brother Witz fondly remembers her as someone that they, as kids, had the highest respect for. They would always go to her for advice as she would never judge anyone. Throughout the years she would always welcome many into her home and make them feel comfortable. She never had a bad word to say about anyone and lived her life more Christ-like than anyone he has ever seen, he recently noted.
Picnics were a favorite activity of Rachel’s, and when the weather cooperated, she prepared both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for her family on the alkali flat north of Diamond Valley. She also loved Farm Bureau dances at the old Sadler Quonset hut, read her bible faithfully, was nice to everyone she met, never forgot a birthday, and always put others before herself.
She is survived by her children Beth (Randy) Mills of Pilot Rock, Oregon, Laurel (Gracien) Marshall Uhalde, of Eureka, Reese (Lisa) Marshall of Buhl, Idaho, Garney (J.D.) Damele of Eureka, and Andrew (Deseri) Marshall, of Eureka and her brother Witz (Barbara) Bailey of Eureka. Her grandchildren Nolan and Mackenzie Mills, Julie (Michael) Uhalde, Nicolas Etchegaray, Melissa, Megan, and Jamie Damele, Will, Ethan, and Mary Kate Marshall, and Leandra, Isaiah, Lauryn, and Ira Marshall, and two great-grandchildren Lucas and Emma Lynn Etchegaray. As the only daughter in the family, Rachel valued her sisters-in-law and leaves behind Dea (Booth) Bailey, of Dillon, Montana, Genny (Lee) Bailey Brown, of Reno, Nevada, Barbara Bailey, and her brother-in-law Randy (Ti) Howe of San Diego, California, in addition to the many nieces and nephews who always asked how Aunt Rachel was doing. She is preceded in death by her husband Bill ‘Pop’ Marshall, daughter Julie M. Marshall, and brothers Shipley ‘Lee’ Bailey, Booth E. Bailey, and Wallace Hale Bailey and sister-in-law Donna Bailey.
The family would like to thank Bertha Arias, of Diamond Valley, for her unending love and support as she helped take care of Gramma Rachel in the latter months. It was only during these last days that Gramma needed to be taken care of by another as she had spent her whole life taking care of those around her.
