David Michael Heywood, born February 2, 1940 in Taylorsville, UT to David Heywood and Margaret Heywood, passed away March 27, 2018 at home in Vancouver, WA. He was raised in Bountiful and Salt Lake City, UT.

Mike served in the United States Marine Corps for five years during which he married Mary Louise Martineau Heywood. They were married fifty-five years and have three children and seven grandchildren.

Mike earned his Journalism degree from the University of Utah leading to his forty year career with increasing responsibility reporting with the Deseret News in Cedar City, UT and the Times-Advocate in Escondido, CA, as the Managing Editor of The Daily Press in Victorville, CA, then thirty years as reporter, City Editor, Copy Editor, and Editorial Editor of The Columbian newspaper in Vancouver, WA. After retirement, Mike delivered flowers for five years for Luepke Florist.

Heywood was always actively involved in the community. He was President of The Columbian Credit Union for twenty years. He caught the theatre bug in 1977 and acted, directed, and produced hundreds of plays and was Chair of the Slocum House Theatre Company for twenty years. He was on the Clark County Planning Commission. He was actively involved with politics as a Precinct Committee Officer of the 100th Precinct, Chair of the 49th Legislative District Democrats, and Chair of the Clark County Democrats. He was elected Permanent Caucus Chair by acclamation of the 49th Legislative District caucuses three days before his passing. He also loved meeting and greeting people in his tux volunteering as an usher for the Portland Opera. He loved to travel, exploring different countries and customs. Mike loved to play and explore with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Martineau Heywood; daughter, Michele Louise McDermid; son, Michael (wife Marcella) Heywood; daughter, Mel Heywood (partner, Ryan Jory); grandchildren, Daniel, Curtis, Sarah, and Charles McDermid, and Veronica, Nathaniel, and Samantha Heywood; ex son-in-law, Martin H. Huckey; and his sisters, Patricia, Jane and Kate.

Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2223 NW 99th St., Vancouver, WA at *10 a.m., Wed., April 4th, with interment to follow at Park Hill Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life Sat., April 28th at the Red Cross Building at the Historic Reserve, 600 Barnes, Vancouver, WA from 4p.m. to 8p.m.
