Eldest son of Lonnie Earl and Margaret Lampkin Carlton of Arkabutla, Mississippi, Charles served in the U.S. Army in Europe as a Private in the Ordinance Corps during World War II. Following the War, he married Catherine Virginia Calvin in 1948. There were four children: Lonnie, Becky, Peggy, and Charlotte. He and his family lived in Jackson for over forty years where he was a successful insurance agent and business owner as well as a devout Episcopalian.
