11-year-old Jeffery lived in the West End neighborhood of Atlanta with his mother, Willie Mae Mathis and siblings. He attended Joel Chandler Harris Elementary. Sometimes he carried groceries for customers at Krogers on Cascade Road. Jeffery was last seen leaving to go to Star Service Station. Months later a witness said he was seen getting into a car with two men. His body was believed to be found in a briar-covered patch of woodlands near Suber and Cascade (Plummer) Road by FBI agents and trained dogs. Jeffery is listed as a victim in the Atlanta Child Murders.

The funeral for Jeffrey Lamar Mathis was held Saturday, 21 February 1981 at the West Hills Presbyterian Church on Gordon Rd., SW. Remains were held at the Haugabrooks Funeral Home and Cemetery prior to funeral.
