John Raford "J.R." Hughes, age 77, of the Estatoe Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ray and Nell Ball Hughes. He was also preceded in death by sisters: Debroah Barnett and Ruth Kegley and brothers: C.D., Bobby and James Hughes. J.R. attended Altapass Baptist Church. He worked for Burleson Tire Shop for many years and later retired from Henredon Manufacturing. He enjoyed working on cars, gardening and the company of his late "bulldog," Raford. Above all J.R. loved spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored.
Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Jewel Roland Hughes; Keith Miller of Spruce Pine whom he considered a son; Izabell and Bryson Miller whom he considered his grandchildren; sisters: Mary Martha Blevins and husband, Harold, of Burnsville and Rebecca Kegley of Burnsville; brothers: Bill Hughes of Burnsville and Rev. Russell Hughes and wife, Margaret, also of Burnsville. Several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12th in Altapass Baptist Church. Pastor Dr. Marcus Benfield and Rev. Tony Lominac. Burial will follow in the Crabtree Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church.
The family would like to thank friends, special neighbors and Blue Ridge Hospice and Palliative Care for all the love and support during J.R.'s illness. Flowers are appreciated or memorial donations may be made to the family to help with expenses.
