Gene Brown 1927-2018
Covington, LA-Gene Brown, 90, formerly of Sherman, IL, Passed from this life on May 6, 2018, at his home in Covington, LA quietly and peacefully with his loving wife Billie at his side.
He was born July 28, 1927, in Wayne County Illinois, the son of Cloyd Brown Sr. and Mae Electra (Williams) Brown. On January 12, 1951, he married Mary E. Carroll in East Alton, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his first wife Mary on December 1, 1995; and by his older brother Cloyd J. (Doc) Brown November 10, 2009. He married Billie L. Johnston on March 8, 1997 and she survives. He is also survived by three sons
Wayne Carroll (Bonnie) Petersburg, IL, Christopher Brown (Jeanna) Covington, LA and Nathan Brown (Adrienne) Covington, LA.
He was quite proud of his six grandchildren, William Kenyon, Matthew Brown, Henry Brown, Eli Brown Covington, LA; Mike Carroll (Jennifer), Wentzville, MO; and Theodore J. (TJ) Carroll of Chicago, IL
Mr. Brown served in the US NAVY during WWII in the Pacific Theater as an Electrician's Mate on the USS Thurston and the USS Mann. He began his 36-year career with Illinois Bell Telephone Co. and ATT&T shortly after leaving the service. He had a simple persona, with a quick wit that overflowed with folklore from Southern Illinois where he was raised.
He was a member of the Northshore Church of Christ, Mandeville, LA; Lakeside Church of Christ, Springfield, IL; Telephone Pioneers of America; American Legion Post 32; and VFW Post 755.
By request, a graveside service was held at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, IL June 9, 2018, with Military Honors by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County. The Honors were followed by comments from Pastor William Clary; song and Lord's prayer by Robert Teel and Family; Obituary reading by Wayne Carroll; and dismissal Prayer by Pastor Adam Cozort. Mr. Brown requested there be no flowers and any memorials be sent to the Springfield Senior Citizens.
The family of Mr. Brown expresses sincere thanks for the many heartfelt condolences. Members of the Lakeside Church of Christ hosted a celebration of life potluck at their building after the graveside service.
