California Governor. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 35th Governor of California from 1983 until 1991. Born to Armenian immigrants, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Siena College. He became interested in politics and the Republican Party, when he served as a volunteer for Thomas E. Dewey's presidential campaign in 1948. In 1952, he received his Law degree from St. John's University and following graduation, he served with the United States Army Judge Advocate Corps in Paris. He served in the California State Assembly from 1963 until 1967 and went on to serve in the California State Senate from 1967 until 1979. From 1979 until 1982, he served as Attorney General of California during the Governorship of Jerry Brown. He defeated Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to become Governor of California in 1982 and bested him a second time for reelection in 1986. During his tenure as Governor, he took a tough stance on crime and was opposed to taxes which would have generated funding for health and education. he was successful in passing legislation to go towards improvements in the state's transportation system. After leaving office, he remained in the political arena as an advisor.
