The son of Christian & Susanna Schop or Shopp, both parents were dead before 1850. He is found in that census as a clerk living with and/or working for the John Sheaffer family in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was still a clerk living in Manheim and found in that census with his surname spelled "Shop," offering a suggestion on how it was pronounced.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. C, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1873. His surname is spelled "Schopp" in the muster roll, in Bates, and the Lancaster County Veteran Burial list but "Schopf" in his pension index.
