James was the son of Jonathon & Nancy Richards Culbertson. He was married Aug. 17, 1848 in Massac County to Susanna May. Susanna is buried in the Grand Chain Masonic Cemetery, Grand Chain, Pulaski County, IL. They had at least nine children. One son, Joseph James Culbertson and his wife, Josie, are buried at Concord Cemetery in rural Olmsted.

James took his family and moved to Obion Co., TN sometime before 1860 as he can be found when the census is enumerated there on October 19, 1860. Family lore says that he moved and then fought in the Civil War and participated in the "Battle Above The Clouds" which took place in the area of Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge.

I have not found a written record of James in any formal military regiments. It is very possible that he fought as a volunteer or in someone elses place. Sometime after the war James brought his family back to IL where they stayed for several more generations. James can be found in the 1880 census for Pulaski Co., IL.

James at one time had a wooden cross that decayed and the family never put up a stone. I have ordered a stone and should get it in the next month. James will have a new stone by the end of Summer and his grave location will be noted in both the burial book and in the cemetery.
