Susanna was a daughter of Holden Gate May and Jane "Jincy" Palmer. Susanna and James Culbertson were married 17 August 1848 in Massac Co., IL. Their family can be found in the 1850 Massac Co., IL Census in 1850. In 1860 they are living in Obion Co., Tennessee just before the outbreak of the Civil War they left Illinois and went back to their state of birth. In 1870 and all the years later, up until their deaths they made their home in Pulaski County, IL. Susanna was buried in Grand Chain and sometime after her death James moved to the little community of Levings. He is buried in the Olmsted Cemetery, also in Pulaski Co., IL.

Gravesite Details

Susanna's grave is easy to find as it sits right out next to the paved highway. When you head North out of Grand Chain you will pass Susanna's grave on the right, before you pull up into the cemetery. The stone is in a rather precarious position.
