Marjorie Clark Gouge, 617 Westwood Drive (Golf Course Acres,) Elizabethton, died Saturday afternoon June 10, 2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, following a lengthy illness. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late B. Monta and Bess Warren Clark. She was a graduate of Happy Valley High School where she played on the Girl's Basketball Team. While in high school she worked at the Bonnie Kate Theatre. Following graduation from high school she attended the University of Tennessee. In 1946 she married her beloved husband, Carl Gouge. Marjorie made many friends throughout her business career while she worked at Burgie Drug Store for the late Max Jett. After working at Burgie Drug, she spent the rest of her business career representing Horace Mann Insurance in East Tennessee. She also was the coordinator for the Community Welcome Wagon of Elizabethton. Her community service included the Business and Professional Women of which she had served as president, and The Experiment in International Living. She had served as a member and chairman of the Administrative Board of Carter County Memorial Hospital. She had served as a member of the Heart Association, was instrumental in the founding of the Carter County Boys and Girls Club. She was an active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years. She was proud of the fact that she served her Lord as the first deaconess of her church. She had taught the Children's Sunday School Class in her church for many years, was involved actively involved in the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet, and had been active in the WIC and the Women's Circle. She loved gospel music and her favorite groups were, The Blackwood Brothers and The Gaithers. She loved her pet poodles which kept her company for many, many years. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Gouge who died November 29, 1993, a sister Marian McGuire, two brothers-in-law, John Hixson and Jerry Hayes. She leaves behind a loving family who loved her dearly and she loved them equally. Her survivors include; two sons Michael McGuire of Elizabethton, Rex Parris and his wife Cathy of Johnson City, two grand-daughters, Rachel Paris Tremmier of Alpharetta, GA and Christie Parris-Stephens of Chattanooga, TN, two sisters, Frances Hixson and Molly Hayes both of Elizabethton, one brother and sister-in-law Monta and Joan Clark, Jr. of Lookout Mountain, TN., several nieces and nephews which include, Susan Smith, Millie Turrentine Jenkins, Jamie Butterworth, Sherry Hazelwood, Kathy Hughes, Linda Hixson Ashworth, Mitsy Costello, Monta Clark, III, Gregory Clark, Jerry Hayes, Jr., Jimmy Hayes and Joey Hayes, several great nieces and nephews which include; Dan and Ben Smith, Alice Jenkins, Sarah and Rebecca Butterworth, Michael Hazelwood, John and Zach Hughes, Ethan Ashworth, Jody Stein, Denton and Molly Clark, Savannah and Sydney Hayes. Her special caregivers, Ersel and David Campbell, two special friends, Judy Stevens and Iola Shepherd, and a special cousin, Bill Grindstaff. A funeral service for Marjorie Clark Gouge, 617 Westwood Drive (Golf Course Acres,) Elizabethton, who died Saturday, June 11, 2006, will be conducted at 8:00 P M Tuesday in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway Percy Funeral Home with Dr. Terry L. Greer and Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jerry Barnett and Josh and Kristin Smith. The family will receive friends from 6:30 till 8:00 PM Tuesday and other times at Mrs. Gouge's residence. The graveside service and interment will be at 12:00 P M Wednesday at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
