John was the son of Mitchell Sterling, born in Canada, and Ursula Minnie, the daughter of two French pioneering families along the St. Clair River in St. Clair County, Michigan, the Minnies and the St. Bernards.

John married Mariah Johnson, daughter of Lewis Johnson and Eliza Allen, on April 18, 1875, in Deerfield Township, Lapeer County Michigan. Mariah died in childbirth December 28, 1883. After Mariah's death, John married Ida Mae Tebeau, daughter of Alexander Tebeau and Elizabeth Johnson. John was a farmer in Deerfield Township. He died at the home of his brother in North Branch, of stomach cancer and heart disease. His youngest child was only two weeks old at the time, and later some of the children went to live with their grandparents Tebeau and other relatives. One son, Alexander, took the Tebeau surname.

His burial information comes from his death certificate from the State of Michigan, which states he was born at the settlement of Belle River Mills.

John was the father of eleven children: with his first wife Mariah: Minnie, Elsie, Edith (died in childhood) and Floyd (died at birth); with second wife Ida Tebeau: Rex, Tyler, Mae, Elizabeth, Pearl, Alexander and John Jr. (died in infancy).
