The 1850 St Charles, Kane Co., IL census holds some interesting clues. Elizabeth is likely the daughter of William Baird (born c. 1780) who was then living with the Andrus family . That census (which transcribes William’s surname as Baine) gives his POB as Massachusetts but the 1880 census for Elizabeth lists her father as from Scotland & her mother from Vermont. Also residing in their household were Margeanne (sic, daughter Margianna) & Marble H Andrus (1844 IL). Marble was not their son- indeed, Andrus was not even his surname. Actually, Marble H Baird, born 23 Sept 1844 St Charles, IL, died 5 May 1921 in Tahoka, TX, was the son of Alexander H Baird (c. 1804 NY- ?, sometime after 1880, probably in Cowley, KS) & his first wife Mary Ann (née Hart or Donaldson) who was born in 1810, died in 1846, & is buried in the South Cemetery here in St Charles. Alexander “A H” Baird remarried in Kane Co., IL after his first wife’s death to Charlotte Spalding (may not have been her maiden name) on August 29th, 1847. It seems likely that Alexander was Elizabeth’s brother (& Marble her nephew) but the 1880 census gives both of Alex’s parents as from New York.

No grave has been found here for William Baird, though he may have moved west with Alex.
