Joseph Pintauro was raised in Ozone Park, New York. He attended St. Jerome's in Ontario where he studied Latin, then continued his education at Our Lady of Angels Seminary, Niagara University. In 1958 he was ordained as a Catholic Priest. During his time as a Priest he travelled to South America building churches before returning to the US where he served as a Parish Priest in Brooklyn. He left the Priesthood in 1966 and pursued a career as a copy writer and poet.

His first published work of poetry, "To Believe in God", was published two years later. His first novel, "Cold Hands", was published in 1979, During his life Mr. Pintauro taught fiction writing, playwriting and filmmaking.

He moved to Sag Harbor, New York where he was a well known and respected member of the artistic community. He was integral to the opening of the Bay Street Theatre and involved with the Parish Art Museum. He and his husband, Greg Therriault, married in 2013
