"August married Albertina Bruss October 23, 1857, in Barkow. (German marriage records list her name as Hanne Catharine Maria Bruss, daughter of Daniel Bruss.) Four sons, Wilhelm Johann, August Wilhelm Martin, Herman and Robert, were born to August and Albertina while they were living in Barkow. August Wilhelm was the only one to survive. The family immigrated to America in 1866. According to August's obituary from the St. Ansgar Enterprise, "They lost two children on their way to America, one of which found its grave in the ocean deep."
