Gercke was a producer and director of films for the U.S. Information Agency. He began his career as a newspaperman in New York and went to Washington in 1935 to work for the U.S. film service making films for the Maritime Commission. He also made films for "March of Time."
During WWII he served as an overseas motion picture expert with the O.S.S. He later worked in Japan and returned to the U.S. in 1954. Gercke was a member of the Motion Picture and Television engineers. He died of cancer.
