In 1870, he resided in Lynchburg, Virginia and worked as a tobacco auctioneer.

The obit of George [Jr] who died in 1881 was published in the Lynchburg News 26 April 1881 and reads:

"DEATH OF AN OLD MERCHANT. -- Yesterday morning early Mr. George Steptoe, the well known tobacco commission merchant of this city, died at his place of residence with Mr. James M. Armstead [sic-Armistead], his brother-in-law, on corner Fourth and Clay streets, aged 66 years. The deceased was a native of Bedford county, but removed to Lynchburg quite early in life to engage in business, and has been identified with the mercantile interests of the town for upwards of forty-two years. He had many friends in this city and the adjoining counties, all of whom will regret sincerely to learn of his death. Mr. Steptoe had been in failing health for several years past. The funeral services will take place at 3 o'clock this afternoon in the Second Presbyterian Church."
