Dr. Jimmy R. Asbell, of Macon, died on Monday, June 18, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Vineville United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM-7:00PM Friday, July 6, 2018 at Hart’s at the Cupola. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Vineville United Methodist Church 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
A lifelong resident of Macon, Georgia, Dr. Asbell was the son of the late George Eugene and Claudia Eloise Jones Asbell. He was an honor graduate and the Cadet Colonial of Lanier High School ROTC in 1958. He graduated cum laude from Mercer University in 1961. In 1965, Dr. Asbell earned his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia, followed by an internship at the Macon Hospital. After a year of surgical residency, Dr. Asbell served as a Captain in the United States Air Force, stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi and Del Rio, Texas.
After returning to the Medical College of Georgia to complete an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, Dr. Asbell established his practice in Macon in 1972. He was a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. While a member of Bibb County Medical Society, he served several terms as Delegate to the Medical Association of Georgia. Dr. Asbell was the first President of the Staff at Northside Hospital and served as Chief of Surgery in 1990.
On his return to Macon, Dr. Asbell was the team doctor for the Central High Football Team for several years. As an active member of Vineville United Methodist Church, Dr. Asbell served on various church boards and was a member of the Webb Fellowship Sunday School Class for 46 years. Having been a Boy Scout in his youth, Dr. Asbell served on the Executive Board of the Central Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award in 1983. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Stratford Academy. After his medical retirement in 1994, Dr. Asbell was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and served two terms as President. He later was a member of the North Macon Kiwanis Club where he received the Georgia Leadership Medallion. For over ten years on Mondays, visitors at the Ocmulgee National Monument were greeted by Dr. Asbell. For a decade, he was part of a team that volunteered every Christmas to count the red kettle monies for the Salvation Army.
