Longtime Tuolumne County resident Julia M. Sierra died Tuesday at a Sonora hospital. She was 96.

She was born in Jamestown and was the second oldest daughter of Joseph and Costanza Franco. She graduated from Jamestown Grammar School and Sonora High School, in the class of 1927. After high school, she went to work at the JC Penney Store in Sonora as its first cashier.

She later married her high school sweetheart, Andrew Sierra. After the U.S. Marine Corps released him on a medical discharge in the early part of World War II, they moved to Oakland to work. They retired to Sonora in 1975.

She is survived by her sister, Alma Montanelli, of Chico; a niece, Carolyn Morse McGinty, of Sonora; nephews, Ernest Carboni, of Sacramento, P. Joseph Morse, of Hawaii, Larry Franco, of Westlake Village, Rick Franco, of Modesto, and Robert Morse, of Eureka; four grandnieces; and three grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy; sisters, Celia Carboni, Josephine Bailey, Eva Morse, and Lena Franco; a brother, Duilio Pete Franco; and a niece, Marilyn Jean Carboni.
