Jones November 8, 1860, in Milford, Juniata County, and fathered Hettie (b. 03/31/62), Charles S. (b. 04/18/66), Jessie Maud (b. 03/04/72, d. 08/22/75), and John J. (b. 10/18/78). In 1860, he was a millwright living in Juniata Township, Perry County, and stood 6' 0" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on September 10, 1864, and was honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
