Jane was 18 years old when she married 27 year old William Frame. During their 37 year marriage, she endured the hardships of the frontier. Of her twelve children, two sons died in infancy, a third son died of disease during the Civil War.

William Frame, son of William and Jane McCarnahan Frame was born 1857 in Porter County Indiana. At age 93, he was interviewed and recalled some of the early years. "…. was born in a log cabin built by his father across the Lake-Porter county line in Union township. The locality was known as Frame’s Settlement, because the Frames came there in 1833. They built the first school house, a log structure, and in the year he was born, his father, uncles, brothers and neighbors set up the first church, also of logs and named it Union Chapel. William recalled that his mother cooked in an open fireplace and that he was a grown boy when their home life was revolutionized by the purchase of a kitchen range. When William was five years old his brothers “joined up” to fight in the Civil War, leaving him home to pull weeds and help with the chores".
