When he was an unmarried young man, he had aspirations to become a photographer and in 1941 enlisted in the Coast Guard. After his almost 5 years of service were up, he met Alice Jesse Lawrence and they were married in Chicago. While they lived in the city their first 2 daughters were born: Mildred & Margaret Ann.
The family moved to Wisconsin and first settled in the Black Creek area. Two more daughters and a son were born to them in Wisconsin: Catherine "Kay", Jean Agnes & Roy Michael. Later they moved to New London, WI and lived there for many years.
