Mary Jane Alford married Newton Russell Rickman on 8 Jan 1839 Marshall Co., Tennessee. According to her son's biography, his father died on 21 December 1872.
In 1873, Reconstruction was causing problems for families in Tennessee. For Mary Jane Rickman, times were hard. Her husband died leaving her several young children. The older ones had married and established homes of their own. Mary Rickman decided to move to Texas in 1877, bringing some of the younger children with her. Making the journey with her, and settling first in Somervell County, and then in 1878 moved to Young County. Her children who moved to Young County were Robert Lee Rickman, Jesse Thomas Rickman, and Columbus Monroe Rickman.
Mrs. Rickman and her sons lived south of Graham while the boys worked in farms and ranches in the area.
Mrs. Mary Jane Rickman died after a short attack of malaria.
