Magnus Nicolson never married (per family information, and death certificate). He is found on the Census of Scotland for 1881, 1891 and 1901. He appears to have traveled to New Zealand at that time, where he lived much of his life in Gisborne and became a public accountant. After his retirement he spent several years living in London (Kensington South), before returning to New Zealand 17 months before his death.

He was believed to have been crippled in an accident, and left an estate of £22,000 to the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society.
