Dighton-Gilbert J. "Sonny" Lopes, Sr. husband of Anita R. (Charron) Lopes, died in Charlton Hospital in Fall River on Friday Jan. 3, 2014, as a result of a fall in his home.
He was born in Dighton, son of the late John and Lena (Badejo) Lopes.
He was a communicant of St Nicholas of Myra Church in North Dighton. Educated in Dighton Schools, Sonny served in the US Army being discharged as a Corporal.
In his youth he worked as a foundry worker and truck driver. In 1964 he founded G. Lopes and Sons. He was the former president of his company which has expanded to include NER (New England Recycling) with both companies and offices on Winthrop St. in Taunton. Sonny enjoyed studying WWII military history. He also enjoyed going to Foxwoods.
Dedicated to his companies he went to work daily.
