The immediate cause of death was paralysis, she having suffered from a severe cold for about one week prior to her death. Mrs. Gehrke reached the good old age of 87 years. Mrs. Maria Gehrke, nee Wolfgram, was born at Leine, Province Pommerania, Germany on February 4th, 1822. She was married to Gottlieb Gehrke who died in the old home in Germany in September, 1870 at the age of 53 years. In 1884, together with her two children and their families she emigrated into the United States, coming directly to Mayville, where she has resided up to within about four years ago when she moved to the town of Theresa on the farm purchased by her son-in-law, Mr. Fred. Neumann. She leaves surviving her to mourn her departure, her son William Gehrke of this city and her daughter Mrs. Friedrich Neumann of the town Theresa as well as two sisters who still reside in Germany. Besides these she leaves twelve grand children and three great-grand children. Two daughters preceded her in death while still in the fatherland.
Her death came rather suddenly on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Neumann, with whom she has resided ever since coming to America. The funeral was held yesterday from St. John's Church, Rev. R. Schroth rendering a touching eulogy on the life of the deceased. Her remains were thence taken to Graceland Cemetery for final interment.
Mrs. Gehrke was one of those sturdy women whose faith never wavered and who lived for her children a happy and contented life. Thus she will ever be remembered by her people, who rejoiced over her vigorous long life and now deeply mourn the loss of a dear, good relative. But they anticipate a happy reunion in the eternal Fatherland.
