Barbara Heath Matthews of Rose Hill passed from her earthly life late Sunday, July 22, 2018 while a resident of Day Spring Assisted Living in Wallace. She was born on March 22, 1940 in Pender County to the late Roy Teachey and Catherine Stevens Heath. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband Jimmy Mathews, Sr., her brother R. T. Heath, and sister June Godwin.

Mrs. Matthews leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her children--Ricky L. Matthews and wife Sharon of Rose Hill, Jim Matthews Jr. and wife Patsy of Rose Hill, Jill Matthews and her husband Tim of Pink Hill; grandchildren--Tamara Matthews of Rose Hill, Adam Blackmon of Hawaii, Alicia Sutton and husband Chad of LaGrange, Ashley Jata and husband Richard of Beulaville, Reid Smith of Beulaville; great grandchildren--Zachery Page of Rose Hill, Shelby Jada of Beulaville, Sandy Jata of Beulaville, Ellison Sutton of LaGrange; sisters--Virginia Register of Virginia, Jean Cunningham of Willard, Laura Cumer of Wallace and Joy Brown and husband Ray of Goldsboro; brothers--Fred Heath of Willard, Joe Heath and wife Lisa of Rose Hill.

Her career began as an office administrator with JP Stevens for eighteen years, after which, she worked with her husband on the farm and remained there for the remainder of her career. During this time she served ten years as a volunteer with the Rose Hill Rescue Squad as an EMT. She had a great love for her church and was very active at Corinth Baptist for a number of years, along with her husband. There was great joy in working in her lawn and much time was spent there. The light of her life was her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. They always had a special place in her life.

A graveside service honoring Mrs. Matthews will be held at Fussell Cemetery in Rose Hill on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. (In the event of inclement weather, service will be in the Corinth Baptist Church.) Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 til 8:00 p.m. at the home of Jim and Patsy Matthews in Rose Hill-.
