Dorothy (Dot) Jerashen Combs, 78, of Bradleyville, MO passed away on July 23, 2018. Visitation will be held at Kissee-Scofield-Eakins Funeral Home, 15945 Hwy 160, Forsyth, MO 65653 from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, July 27, 2018. Funeral service we be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 28, at the White River Youth Association, 13573 Hwy 76, Taneyville, MO 56759 with Pastor Dennis Winzenried officiating. Burial will follow in the Patterson Cemetery, Bradleyville.
Dorothy was born July 30, 1939 in East St. Louis, Illinois to Dorothy Electa and John Jerashen. She attended elementary and high school at Godfrey and Alton, Illinois. She lived in the St. Louis area where she bought and sold real estate until she met her husband and moved to the Ozarks. She immediately fell in love with the natural beauty that defines the hills and valleys and its people. Dot had a special talent for all things art and reveled in painting, creating beautiful stained glass, making jewelry, spinning, weaving, and countless other pleasures. Dot founded and operated the Getaway Gift Shop in Bradleyville.
Dot had a very special love for her Blue & Gold McCaw named Dude. She got Dude as a baby bird, and it was mutual love at first sight. Unfortunately, after she had Dude for twenty years, taught him tricks and how to speak, doctors told her the dander from Dude's feathers was causing a serious lung disease. She tearfully helped find a new home for Dude with some of her good friends. The doctors then told her that some of the chemicals from her gift shop might also be contributing to her lung disease, so she sold the Getaway Gift Shop. Despite giving up two of her loves, the lung disease progressed and took her life.
Dot and her husband, James Leon Combs, owned the Beaver Creek Elk & Cattle Ranch near Bradleyville. She enjoyed hosting school children and other groups at her home. She especially enjoyed bringing the grade school children over to swim in her pool (with qualified lifeguard on duty) and then allowing them to make their own chocolate sundaes and banana splits. She helped choreograph several charitable fundraisers at her home, sometimes raising as much as $100,000 for one event.
Dot is survived by her husband, James Leon Combs, and four children: Joseph Hayes, New Braunfels, TX; Denise Hayes and Michael Flanigan, Kansas City; Andrew and Nancy Hayes, St. Louis and Martin and Brenda Hayes, Kansas City. She is also survived by her step-children: Randi Ellen Westphal of New Zealand; Brett and Susi Combs, St. Louis and Lisa Combs Lemons, Boston; 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
