US Senator. She served in the United States Senate from the state of Alabama from June 8, 1978 to November 7, 1978. She studied journalism at the University of Alabama and later worked as both an insurance agent and a newspaper editor. She was working as a staff writer for the Birmingham News when she met then-Lieutenant Governor James Allen of Alabama. They married in August of 1964. She continued in journalism while her husband's political career went from Lieutenant Governor of Alabama to member of the United States Senate. When James passed away in June of 1978, she was appointed by Gov. George Wallace to fill his seat. She decided to run to fill the remaining two years of her husband's term, but lost in the Democratic primary to state Sen. Donald W. Stewart. After leaving the Senate in 1978, she worked as a columnist for the Washington Post before returning to Birmingham, Alabama. She was a public relations and advertising director for C. G. Sloan & Co., an antique and auction firm, and the owner of Maryon Allen Company, a restoration and design firm in Birmingham.
