Her father's grandfather, Pierre-Louis Maillet (dit Saint-Louis), was born about 1713 in Saint-Nizier, near Lyons in France, and came to Canada as a soldier. His name was also spelled "Mayer" and "Mayette."

Marie-Angélique Maher was born at Montréal in 1809, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Maher and Marie-Louise Morand, and was baptized at the Church of Notre-Dame on March 2, 1809. On Dec. 26, 1831, at Sainte-Rose-de-Lima Church (Laval), she married Antoine Labelle, a shoemaker. They had two children: Antoine and Marie. Marie died at the age of 4 years and four months, while Antoine went on to be a Roman Catholic priest and later "curé" of the parish of Saint-Jérôme. Curé Labelle was very close to his parents, who travelled with him to each of the parishes under his care. The parishioners of Saint-Jérôme were very fond of Angélique, affectionately calling her "Madame Curé." She was wholly devoted to her "petit garçon," and Labelle in turn held her dear. In 1889, he had a small chapel built next to the presbytery in Saint-Jérôme, as his mother's failing health prevented her from going to church. Angélique Maher died only a few months after her son, and was buried beside the chapel where he was interred.
