United States Navy Rear Admiral. U.S. Navy's first female admiral, Director of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. Duerk received her nursing training at Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her diploma in 1941. She was appointed Ensign in the Nurse Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserve (1943), transferring to the U.S. Navy (1953). Rear Admiral Duerk retired in 1975.
