In his youth, he clerked in his father's dry goods store, and continued on in the business for a time after his father's death. He was a founder of Shreveport's Mutual Building Association as well as Director and Vice President of the First National Bank there.
He served two terms on Shreveport's City Council and was a long-time member of the town's Police Jury and served as Chairman of its Finance Committee. He was elected to the Louisiana State Legislature where he served from 1904-1908.
Married to Sophia Friedlander, they were the parents of four daughters.
