The son of David & Elizabeth (Greenholtz) Peters, he married Rebecca Miller September 14, 1852, in York County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Peter David Miller (b. 11/24/52), Mary Jane (b. 05/05/55, d. 07/03/62), John Calvin (b. 10/15/60), Charles Henry (b. 12/20/62), Eli Wilson (b. 08/27/66), and Emmeline M. (b. 06/26/69 - married Daniel Bear Snyder and Samuel Brake). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Latimore Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 4" tall with sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of thirty-five in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 10 as a private with Co. K, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-eight in Harrisburg February 24, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 1 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. C, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He died at his home at the reported age of 78-8-6 from "softening of brain" with "acute indigestion from double inguinal hernia" a contributing factor.
