Obituary Gonzales Inquirer July 3, 1963

Aged Woman Dies Recently

"Aunt Mat" who lived on the Kokernot ranch, died in Shiner several weeks ago at the age of 101 years. Brothers stated: " the sphere of her good influence has extended much farther than the 2 families, the Kokernot and Brothers, to whom she was devoted.
The life of Aunt Martha Harper is a credit to humanity. Her bodily image has returned to dust but the beauty of her spirit shed a gentle glow on the present endeavors and future hopes of many lives.
She stood like an oak on the prairie, thrusting deep into the soil for survival that she might lift her branches to the sky. Many have leaned upon her strength and rested in her kindly shade.
She believed in God and His purpose for life; therefore, no life was too small for her notice, and none so great that it could obstruct the view of her faith. She reared two children of her own, and twenty orphans who without her might never have known love.
In the course of a long life she developed many skills; she was housewife, farmer, stock and and, raiser perhaps most of all, a physician.
In the rural life of an earlier day she was a practicing midwife and many now living have reason to be thankful for her skill and devotion- no matter the hour, the distance or the weather. She understood the herbs of the woodlands and the wild flowers of the hills.
He geographical scope of her being extended only over a small rural area, but the magnitude of her spirit embraces immortality.
She left no written account of her one hundred and one years, knowing in her wisdom that the Great Recorder alone can in truth translate the facts of a simple life well lived into the timeless records of love.
