Senator Lawrence Dumas Jr. was Jefferson County's only state senator in the Alabama House of Representatives for many years. He served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and as a member of the Senate finance and rules committees. He was in the House from 1947 to 1955, and the Senate from 1959 to 1967.
