Amanda was the daughter of William Hare and Rachel Switzer, both natives of New York. This family was residing in Jackson Co., Indiana, by 1850, with four children, Martha, Sarah, Emily, and Amanda, all born Illinois. Some of these daughters' later records list their birthplace as New York. Two more sons, Nicholas Hare and Curtis Hare, were born in Jackson Co., 1850-1858. The father, William Hare, was born about 1817, and was still residing in Jackson Co. in 1870. Rachel, born about 1819, died in Jackson Co., 1860-1870.

Amanda married Arthur Monroe April 22, 1878, in Bartholomew Co., Indiana. They had at least two children, Hattie and Edward Monroe.
